About Athens, Greece

Athens, the capital city of the country of Greece was once the cradle of civilization and is considered to be the birth place of modern democracy. It was also the place where the philosophers Socrates, Sophocles and others were born and formulated ideas that are still used today.

 

The city has a long history that stretches back to ancient times and the monuments and buildings vary from the ruins of ancient Greece as well as those that were built when the country was part of the Ottoman Empire.

There are so many things to see and do in Athens, Greece that you will need more than just a couple of weeks if you want to take in all of the sites. Of course you are going to want to visit the archeological sites of Ancient Greece such as the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Acropolis. You can also see the ruins of the Parthenon as well as other buildings. The Parthenon is also one of the main attractions in this ancient part of the city as is the Agora, which was the meeting place for ancient Greeks.

In addition to its marvelous history, Athens Greece is also one of the most beautiful cities to visit in Greece. No where on Earth can you find such a blend of ancient history and modern history in a fully contemporary setting. Staying in Athens, Greece gives you the best of both worlds.

Athens lies in the South East of Greece and has a year round warm Mediterranean climate. Summers tend to be very hot and the best time to go to Athens is in the cooler spring or fall months. However, if you like the heat, you will enjoy the summers here where the temperatures often soar over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Most hotels have every comfort you can imagine and the staff does speak English. You can also find shopping and the best restaurants in the city. There are trains or taxis that can take you to various parts of the countryside in this beautiful and picturesque country.

The terrain in Greece is anything but flat as the country itself is very mountainous. Athens lies in the center of several large hills and mountains and it is difficult to find any flat part of the country at all. Many of the streets in the older part of Athens seem to stacked up hills and the houses date back to the times of the Ottoman Empire or even before.

If you are planning on visiting Athens, Greece, you will need a passport but not a visa. Dress for warm weather and be prepared to have a good time. Make sure you bring your camera as there are so many different buildings and monuments in this city that you will want to photograph.
