Things To See in Athens, Greece

Make sure you plan to spend several days in Athens, Greece as there is literally so much to see and do in this exciting city. There are art museums, cultural exhibits, ancient ruins, monuments and even outdoor shopping in this ancient city with a modern twist. Over and above everything else, you are going to want to leave plenty of time to eat the fabulous Greek food.

 

Some of the sites you will definitely want to see when visiting Athens, Greece include the following:

The Parthenon

This is one of the most famous of all of the attractions in Greece and should be an absolute must see on your list of things to see and do in Athens, Greece. At night, this monument is truly a sight to behold. The Parthenon is located in the Acropolis and was built around 440 BC. The Parthenon was devoted to Athena, the Goddess of Athens. Restoration of this ancient structure began in the 1970s.

The Erechtheion

This is another temple that is located in the Acropolis and is dedicated to the Goddess Athena and Poseidon. This temple was built about thirty years after the Parthenon. The Acropolis is especially beautiful when lit up at night.

The National Archeological Museum

This museum is located in the heart of Athens and still contains a lot of Greek artifacts although several artifacts have been stolen through the years. In addition to seeing Greek objects that are over 3,600 years old, you can also see artifacts from Ancient Egypt in this stunning museum.

Temple of Olympian Zeus

The Ancient Greeks worshipped several different Greek Gods and Zeus was considered to be the head of the all of the Gods. The Temple of Zeus, constructed in 515 BC, is considered to be one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The temple is of course mostly in ruins, but you can see the columns that remain from this impressive temple that once was the pride of Athens, Greece.

In addition to these sites, you will also want to spend some time shopping in the many outdoor markets as well as visiting the outdoor tavernas where you can eat authentic Greek sweets and sip on Greek coffee. It's ideal location on the Southeastern part of the mainland means that beaches abound in Athens, Greece. A trip to one of the beaches is a must. For shopping, you can choose from one of the upscale market places or even the local outdoor markets that offer just about everything you could think of, including some of the most delicious street food that you will ever eat. You will love visiting beautiful and peaceful Athens, Greece, one of the most beautiful cities along the Mediterranean.
