The Cuisine Of Athens, Greece

When traveling to Athens, Greece, be sure to take along your appetite. There are very few places on earth where you will get such delicious cuisine as in Athens. Athens is located in the Southern part of the mainland of Greece and the food represents the best of the best when it comes to Greek cuisine.

 

Because of the mountainous terrain, you can expect to find a lot of lamb dishes in Athens as well as plenty of goat dairy products. Most of the cheeses here are made with goat milk, including the old favorite, Feta Cheese. Greek food influenced by Italian as well as Middle Eastern cuisine and features shish kabob dishes as well as roasted lamb and potatoes.

While staying in Athens, Greece, make sure that you try some authentic Greek dishes. Moussaka is one of the most favored of all Greek dishes and is cooked with ground lamb, eggplant, vegetables and baked with a béchamel sauce. It is also called "Greek Lasagna" and is one of the most favored of all casseroles.

You will also want to try Dolmades. These are grape leaves stuffed with lamb and rice and cooked in a lemon cream sauce. They are very traditional in Greek cooking and also popular in Persian and Middle Eastern cooking as well.

Athens, Greece has a number of five star restaurants where you can imbibe in both ancient and new cuisine. In order to get the true flavor of Athens, Greece, however, you should definitely visit one of the many tavernas that are located throughout the city. These little outdoor cafes offer Greek coffee, pastries and simple meals of cheese and olives.

The cuisine of Athens, Greece is varied throughout the city. When you are staying in this Mediterranean city, you can try a variety of different authentic Greek dishes as well as Greek sweets such as Baklava. There is so much to see and do in this city that you will be able to walk off those calories in a second.

Whether you visit some of the five star restaurants or the simple tavernas, you can rest assured you will get excellent service anywhere you go because of the inherent pleasant and hospitable nature of people.

In addition to lamb, you will also want to try some of the fabulous seafood that is abundant throughout the country, especially in Athens. The cuisine of Athens, Greece may be varied as in any big city, but the ambiance and service is definitely Greek in nature and restaurants are lively, fun and offer excellent food as well as friendly staff.
